Pinnochio's Children Library is a project of multiple layers. Various variables had to be taken into account: the function of a children's library, the concept of a landmark, and the project as a part of the European Fairy Tale Route.
The flow of the designed space and its "themed" character were of major importance for us. "The adventures of Pinnochio" is a classic fairy tale, with a timeless message and vibrant images. The fairytale's signature image is probably the one of Pinnochio's nose, growing longer with every lie he told. It was this image that we tried to interpret through the medium of space, the result being a truncated cone-form. Those" noses", a playful shape, out of the ordinary spacial form, catch the children's eye and excite their imagination. They house main parts of the library and separate space through their levels, each level being a reading room, team work room, a room for reading with the company of music, a story-telling room. Visual communication between the levels is possible. Reading and discovering under... "Pin nochio's nose" is the main concept of our project.
The Village of Collodi offers multiple attractions, and incorporating them into a route was one of our priorities. Various entrances to the library and its surroundings are offered, to facili tate the flow of visitors towards and from Pinnochio's Park, the Villa and the Carlo Collodi Cultural Centre.
